Information

This was calculated using the height of Kunanyi / Mount Wellington, which is 1,271 metres and the length of a standard 375mm aluminium can which is 129mm. Aluminium cans are the most returned type of container in Recycle Rewards.

Go Tassie, Go! Tasmanians have returned 95,380,475 containers to Recycle Rewards reverse vending machines and depots, helping create new containers as part of the circular economy. This means we’ve reduced the need for raw materials to save enough CO2 to take 7,439 cars off the road for a year, enough energy to power 1,685 Tassie homes for a year, and saved enough water to fill 243 Aquatic Centre pools! #RecycleRewards

Calculations are based on findings from an independent lifecycle analysis (LCA) of drink containers returned to Recycle Rewards refund points (reverse vending machines and depots) across Tasmania.

The LCA is a study that looks at all the CO2/energy/water used to participate and run the container refund scheme – from consumers taking containers to refund point to sorting, transporting and recycling those containers – and it compares this with the CO2/energy/water that’s saved from not using virgin materials to create new containers.

The redemption rate is the percentage of eligible drink containers supplied into Tasmania that have been returned or recovered through the container refund scheme.

52.3% is the redemption rate, which is a combination of the 37.1% of containers that have been returned to Recycle Rewards reverse vending machines or depots, and the 15.2% of containers that have been recovered via kerbside and commercial recycling bins.
